India - HP tops in education, health

Himachal Pradesh has been once again ranked the best-governed state in the country with regard to progress in road connectivity and social sectors like education and health, an official statement said Tuesday.

"It has been ranked as the best state in terms of investment in environment, primary education and health and rated second in consumer market, macro-economy and infrastructure by news magazine India Today," it said.

The hill state has been adjudged the first state in the country to achieve the target of universalisation of elementary education and 100 per cent literacy, even ahead of Kerala. The statement said the state has 20 per cent enrolment in colleges, which is twice the national average.

"The state has become role model for other states when it comes to development priorities. It has given top priority to roads, health, education and self-employment," it said quoting the magazine survey.

In one of the earlier surveys by the magazine, Himachal Pradesh was ranked third in categories of health, law and order and education
