Putting aside their decades-old rivalry, the south stars will be sharing screen space for the first time in a film directed by Kamal

It is a coup of sorts for the South Indian film industry as two of its biggest stars —Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal — have decided to bury the hatchet and come together on screen for the first time. The film is written and directed by Kamal Haasan.

The film, an action adventure, titled Thalaivan Irukkiraan will see Kamal
playing the lead role. Mohanlal has agreed to settle for a powerful second fiddle to Kamal.

Says a source, “The two actors have met several times in Chennai and have discussed at length the story of the film which will be a mega budget action adventure. Kamal has told Mohanlal that he will be the hero and Mohanlal will settle for a pivotal and powerful character which will be the second lead in the film.”

Another project insider adds, “Kamal has already given the bound script to Mohanlal. It is a very significant move for both the actors as they were, all along, engaged in a serious professional rivalry. The rivalry was so strong that they were not ready to share screen space together.” Kamal and Mohanlal had earlier signed a film titled Kandahar which hasn’t seen the light of the day yet.

It has also been frequently reported that the two stars used to avoid crossing each other’s paths at public functions.

“Kamal would have not gone ahead with this film if his Marmayogi had followed the original shooting schedule. Now, that it’s not happening, he wanted to make something very big and he has been trying to get the nod from Mohanlal for a long time now,” the insider adds. Sources reveal that Mohanlal and Kamal will soon meet for further rounds of talks in Chennai where the formal agreement will be signed.
