Sport - Cricket;Hayden expected to announce retirement

Australian opener Matthew Hayden has called a news conference for later on Tuesday following earlier newspaper reports that the batsman is to announce his retirement from international cricket.

The 37-year-old Hayden was dropped from Australia's Twenty20 and one-day teams after the test series against South Africa.

The burly left-hander has scored just 383 runs at an average of 23.93 in his last nine tests, compared to his overall record of 8,625 runs at 50.73.

Hayden recently said he hoped to continue playing until at least the Ashes tour of England later this year, but the decision by selectors to build a new limited-overs side without him and his poor form undoubtedly have expedited his decision
