India - In God's own country ,Singh is Toon King

An album of 123 caricatures and cartoons on him is an unusual souvenir that awaits Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as and when he finds some time off the 123 agreement with the US and travel to Kerala.

The PM has agreed to unveil wax statues of legendary cartoonist Shankar and his close friend Jawaharlal Nehru at an event to mark the 25th anniversary of the Kerala Cartoon Academy. Organisers thought of ways to gift the PM something that he would be unable to part with and hit upon the idea of a collection of cartoons and caricatures.

A total of 123 cartoons have been collected from 12 countries including one by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Raj Thackeray. Starting Monday, all 123 illustrations will be available on 123manmohansingh.blogspot.com.

“We thought of 25 cartoons first, but revised it to 123, after a topic that has inspired the maximum number of cartoons in the recent past,” says Sudheer Nath, one among the organisers. 123 were selected from more than 200 drawings that they received.

Almost all top cartoonists of the country, including HT’s Jayanto Banerjee (on left), have contributed to the edition.
The cartoons are both laudatory and lampooning, representing the sharply diverged reactions that Singh’s insistence on the 123 agreement has evoked.

Though the PMO has confirmed Singh’s participation, a date has not been fixed.
