New Delhi: With the Indian wedding industry growing at an average of 25% annually, those working in the industry are trying their best to cash in on the weddings of the ultra-rich — those that have been symbolized by the Mittals, Saharas, and Bachchans — and cost upwards of Rs2 crore
Ferns and Petals, known for it’s high end floral arrangements, has been planning weddings in India for 10 years and has tied up with world renowned celebrity event designer Preston Bailey, to help scale up the already lavish Indian wedding. His clients in the past have included Oprah Winfrey, Donald Trump, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bill Cosby and Donna Karan.
But despite becoming more lavish, the heart of weddings here still remains traditionally Indian. And Preston Bailey, who’s done weddings as expensive as Rs100 crore, has a signature style that includes a dramatic use of flowers and theatrical sets that haven’t been used in India as methods and techniques in wedding planning.
So are those in this league ready for such a big change in wedding style? “If those in this class are well-educated, and well travelled, they may be ready for such a big change”, says Vinod Nair, Group Fashion Editor for Hindustan Times. “But most rich people, barring a few exceptions, come from a traditional background and have conservative ways of thinking, so a Preston Bailey design may not be for them.”
