Entertainment - Star Jalsha opens strong with 92 GRPs

MUMBAI: Star Jalsha, the newly launched Bengali general entertainment channel (GEC) from Star stable, has managed to garner 92 Gross Rating Points (GRPs) in its debut week.
Star Jalsha has secured the third spot in the Bengali GEC pie, according to Tam data for the week ended 13 September (C&S 4+, West Bengal).

ETV Bangla leads the pack with 335 GRPs, followed by Zee Bangla (320 GRPs). Aakaash Bangla (83 GRPs), DD7 Bangla (41 GRPs) and also rans NE Bangla (24 GRPs) and R-Plus (13 GRPs) are below Star Jalsha in the Bengali GEC chart.
“It is a very encouraging response we have received from viewers,” says Star India regional channel head JC Giri. “The market is very challenging and we have to keep up the momentum.”

Star Jalsha has been high on movies, evident from the ratings that they have clocked. Minister Fatakesto has fetched a TVR of 5.19 for the channel, whereas films like Rankhetra and Jeevan Niye Khela managed TVR of 1.46 and 1.24. Comedy serial I Laugh You (1.21 TVR) and fiction Neer Bhanga Jhor (1.03 TVR) also got 1+ TVR. "It is only first week and 20 per cent of our ratings are coming from serials. This is a good sign for us," says Giri.
Star Jalsha claims to have achieved a reach of 45 per cent in the state. “We have reached 45 per cent viewers across West Bengal in the first week itself. We are definitely looking for leading position with all our regional channels, including upcoming Marathi and Gujarati GEC,” claims Giri.
Star Jalsha's strong start is significant as observers feel it will grow the Bengali GEC market. The Bengali GEC pace did not see any channel launch for the last nine years. "We expect the genre to grow," says a media analyst.
