Entertainment - Mani Casts Suhasini in Ravan

Prithwish Ganguly

Mani Ratnam married award-winning South Indian actress Suhasini in 1988 and he has directed around 15 films since then never casting his wife in any of his movies.

But it seems like Mani has finally realised the acting prowess of his wife after being with her for two decades has cast her to play a pivotal role in his forthcoming film which has Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya in the lead.

Suhasini, who is a trained cinematographer and has also been a director, is the daughter of actor Charu Haasan — the elder brother of Kamal Haasan.

An insider reveals, “Suhasini is set to play a key role in Mani’s film. Though he isn’t revealing much about what the character will be right now, it seems like she will play a queen in the movie. I mean this adds another dimension and selling point for the film. Mani has cast his wife for the first time in his film career.”

The source adds, “Suhasini has been a shadow of Mani for a long long time. She has been a guiding force behind his success for sure and it is great that Mani has cast her in his film. Suhasini is closely associated with this periodic film. She has been helping Mani out with a lot of things. Why suddenly Mani thought of casting her in the film is still unknown? He is a thinking director and he must have thought very carefully before casting his wife. It will be good to see what’s her role in the film and what Mani tells media with reference to her casting and acting.”

Mani’s film is being made in two languages Hindi and Tamil. In the Hindi version Abhishek and Vikram play the epic characters of Rama and Ravana and in the Tamil version Vikram will essay the role of Rama and Prithviraj will don the garb of Ravana.
Aishwarya Rai plays Sita in both the versions.
