Sport - Basketball;Kobe Bryant lifts Lakers team off to best start since 2001

DALLAS, Texas (AFP) – National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Kobe Bryant scored 27 points as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated Dallas 106-99 for their sixth straight victory.

The unbeaten Lakers are off to their best start since the 2001-02 season - the last time Los Angeles claimed the title.

Last year the Lakers reached the NBA finals but fell in six games to the Boston Celtics.

After winning their first five games by an average of 22.4 points, the Lakers faced a stiffer challenge from Dallas, but still managed to hold their opponents to fewer than 100 points for the sixth game in a row.

Spain's Pau Gasol added 22 points and Trevor Ariza scored 13 points off the bench for the Lakers.

Jason Terry led six players in double figures with 21 points and Jason Kidd recorded his 101st career triple double for the Mavericks, who have lost three in a row.

Kidd had 16 points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds.
