LONDON: An overwhelming majority of Britons would have no problem voting for a Prime Minister of African descent, according to a poll published on Sunday, a day after the Head of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Trevor Phillips, caused a row saying that if the U.S. President-elect Barack Obama had lived in Britain he would have struggled to make it to the top because of “institutional racism” in the political system.
The poll, conducted by an independent think tank, Theos, and published in The Sunday Telegraph, showed that 90 per cent of voters would support an African-origin candidate, suggesting Britain was ready for its own “Obama moment.”
However, there was considerable resistance to voting for a Muslim Prime Minister with some 23 per cent voters saying they would not support a Muslim.
