Shimla, Nov 23 (PTI) A total of 16 lakh households in Himachal Pradesh will get a pack of four CFL bulbs each as part of an electricity-saving scheme launched in the state today. The government targets to complete the distribution by December 25, the birthday of former prime minister A B Vajpayee, under whose name the scheme was launched.
Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal launched the state level free CFL distribution ceremony at Kullu, where Vajpayee has a house. Under the scheme 'Atal Bijli Bachat Yojana' a pack of four CFL bulbs each would be provided to 16 lakh households all over the hill state free of cost in replacement of equal number of incandescent bulbs, a release said here.
There would be one-and-a-half year guarantee on each bulb. Apart from serving as an energy-saving measure, it would make the state eligible for earning carbon credits under clean development mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol.
The switch-over to CFL bulbs would save upto 70 MW power a year. The scheme would cost the state exchequer Rs 80 crore.
